Check the simple causes first

In many cases the problem isn't a serious fault. First, switch the machine off and unplug it from the socket.

The most common, easy-to-check causes are: a clogged drain filter (lower front of the machine), a kinked or blocked drain hose, and a blocked sink trap if the drain connects there.

Possible technical faults

If the filter and hose are clean, the cause may be a worn drain pump or one blocked by a small object (coins, buttons, underwire).

Less often the issue is the pressure switch (water-level sensor) or the electronic control module that no longer drives the pump.

What you can do yourself and what you can't

Cleaning the filter and checking the hose are safe jobs you can do yourself with the machine unplugged.

Replacing the pump or pressure switch, or working on the control module, needs tools, the right parts and experience — here it's safer and cheaper in the long run to call a specialist.

When to call a technician

If you've cleaned the filter and hose but the water still won't drain, or you hear the pump straining with no result, it's time to call a technician.
